Making your own bunting is a great way to use up old scraps of material whilst creating a wonderful and effective party decoration. Before you start make sure you have the following materials handy:
Scraps of fabric or for a cost effective alternative use a flat sheet or old curtains from a charity shop
A pair of regular or pinking scissors
A pencil
A Ruler
The Sweet Treat Bunting Template
Six metres of strong, wide satin ribbon or thick brown twine for a more rustic feel
A sewing machine (alternatively you can use a needle and thread or heavy duty fabric glue)
A box of pins
Decorative items can be used to embellish the Bunting if desired (felt, sequins, ribbon, bows and glitter work well)The following instructions will create five metres of beautiful bunting
Print off the Sweet Treat Bunting Template, preferably onto strong card
Decide on a colour scheme or theme for your bunting
Place the template onto your chosen fabric and draw around it in pencil using the ruler to create a sharp edge
Cut out the triangle following the pencil lines- using pinking scissors creates a crinkled edge effect reducing the likelihood of the fabric fraying. Alternatively, add a running stitch around each triangle to secure the edges
Repeat this process until you have 30 triangular shaped pieces of fabric in your desired coloursMeasure out five metres of ribbon or Brown twine
If using ribbon fold the ribbon in half and iron on a medium heat to create a defined crease linePin on the triangles to the ribbon so the top of each triangle meets with the ironed crease line in the centre of the ribbon leaving a 20cm gap at either end of the ribbon.
Repeat with all 30 trianglesOnce all the triangles are attached fold the ribbon in half along the crease line enclosing the join between the triangles and the ribbon
Where the two ends of the folded ribbon meet sew a simple running stitch to hold the triangles in place. If you chose to use twine instead of ribbon use fabric glue instead although this may be messy.
Remove the pins from the ribbon- this can be done as you sew if you preferEmbellish the bunting with glitter sequins or felt letters to suit your occasion
There you have it, your very own beautiful bunting with a little help from The Sweet Treat Company!
